A survey from Careerminds UK found that 67.1% of workers would now prefer to work at a small business or start-up rather than a large corporation.

Almost half (47.0%) said they would choose a small business to support their employer, not just for security.

Only 33.0% said global companies still offered the best career opportunities.

Women were more likely than men to choose a small business for loyalty reasons, at 51.0% compared to 43.0%.

Gen Z preferred small businesses over global corporations at 61.0%.

The preference for small businesses spanned all generations.

Millennials led at 68.0%, followed by Gen X at 67.0% and Boomers at 67.0%, with Boomers most likely to say they wanted to support their employer. Gen Z registered 61.0%.

Gen X were most likely to cite personal security as a reason for their choice.

Women were more likely to pick small businesses out of loyalty, while 25.0% of men cited security, compared to 15.0% of women.

Amanda Augustine, CPCC and resident careers expert for Careerminds UK, said: “When workers across generations, genders and career stages are betting their futures on smaller employers over the large corporations that traditionally represented both job security and career progression, it’s clear something in the job market has fundamentally changed.

“The wave of redundancies over the past two years hasn’t just affected people’s livelihoods; it has also shaken their confidence in big business.

“As a result, smaller, lesser-known employers now have a unique opportunity to attract top talent that may never have considered working for them before. The question is whether they are prepared to capitalise on that hiring opportunity.”
