Make UK launches fast-track apprenticeship for experienced engineers

The revised level 3 apprenticeship is aimed at experienced engineers, with each candidate assessed at the start to identify existing skills and knowledge.

Make UK has launched an accelerated engineering maintenance technician apprenticeship and two new rapid skills training units at its technology hub in Aston, Birmingham.

The revised level 3 apprenticeship is aimed at experienced engineers, with each candidate assessed at the start to identify existing skills and knowledge. 

Training is then tailored to fill only the gaps, combining workplace and centre-based learning. 

The programme can be completed in 24 to 30 months, around half the time of a traditional apprenticeship. 

It is designed for those already in engineering or maintenance roles or those wanting formal recognition of their experience.

Make UK has also introduced two apprenticeship units in mechanical fitting and assembly and electrical fitting and assembly. 

These are delivered in around three weeks and combine hands-on training with technical knowledge. 

Both units are based on recognised occupational standards and are aimed at experienced engineering operatives and technicians who need targeted upskilling with minimal time away from work.

The mechanical unit focuses on core fitting, assembly techniques and safe working practices. 

The electrical unit covers industrial and single-phase wiring, installation skills and safe systems of work.

Mark Farrant, director of apprentices and technical training at Make UK, said: “With around 51,000 vacancies in the sector, manufacturers need flexible training solutions that reflect both the skills people already have and the urgent gaps they need to fill.

“By recognising prior learning and workplace experience, the revised apprenticeship provides a more efficient route to qualification for experienced employees, while maintaining the high standards expected of an Engineering Maintenance Technician apprenticeship.

“Alongside this, our new Apprenticeship Units give employers a rapid, practical way to address specific engineering skills needs in a matter of weeks.”

Farrant added: “Together, these pathways give manufacturers more choice in how they develop critical engineering capability and strengthen their workforce in a way that works for their business.”
