46% of SME leaders now value apprenticeships as highly as degrees, data finds
Nearly half of UK workers said their university education is irrelevant to today’s workforce, according to data from Employment Hero.
Research from Employment Hero found small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) leaders are increasingly backing apprenticeships, with 78% reporting a positive view and increased productivity.
As the UCAS deadline nears, nearly half (46%) of SMEs now value apprenticeships and degrees equally, while 37% place greater value on apprenticeships.
Only 11% see them as less valuable.

More than three quarters of SME leaders said apprenticeships deliver productivity gains.
73% of SME leaders are ready to use the additional apprenticeship support announced in last year’s Autumn Budget.
Kevin Fitzgerald, UK managing director at Employment Hero, said: “As the UCAS deadline approaches, many students will be weighing up what comes next.
“University remains the right choice for many, but it should not be seen as the only route to a successful career.
