Women of Colour in Policing group launches in West Yorkshire

Women of colour from West Yorkshire Police, other forces and allies came together for the launch of the Women of Colour in Policing (WOCIP) group. 

WOCIP will act as a local working group under the British Association for Women in Policing, aiming to improve the experience, career opportunities and confidence of women of colour in West Yorkshire Police.

Chief Constable Sir John Robins said he is committed to tackling structural and cultural barriers faced by women of colour and aligns himself as an ally of WOCIP. 

Robins spoke about the importance of fairness, inclusion and building public trust.

Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins, head of professional standards at West Yorkshire Police, shared her experience of policing and the Black women she looked up to. 

Wilkins pledged to champion women of colour across the Force and support future generations to succeed.

Deputy Mayor Alison Lowe OBE provided the keynote address, talking about her journey in breaking barriers and finding a voice for herself and others. 

Lowe said she supports the launch of WOCIP and pledged to back its growth.
