A new workforce automation study has found that crisis intervention and emergency decision-making are the skills most likely to protect workers from being replaced by artifical intelligence (AI).

The May 2026 report, published by Click Finder, analysed 84 occupations and more than 100 human skills to identify which capabilities are hardest for AI systems to replicate.

The research found that interpersonal, judgement-based and real-world assessment skills offer the strongest protection against automation, while demand for purely technical or repetitive skills continues to weaken.

Crisis intervention and emergency decision-making ranked as the most automation-resistant skill overall, appearing across 22 occupations including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, healthcare social workers and police officers.

Jobs requiring these skills carried an average automation risk of just 9.8%.

Complex case diagnosis and differential reasoning ranked second, featuring in occupations such as dentists, registered nurses, nurse anesthetists and physicians, with an average automation risk of 16.6%.

Patient physical assessment followed closely behind, reflecting the continued importance of human observation, touch and judgement in healthcare settings.

The study also highlighted the growing value of relationship-driven skills.

Client and patient relationship cultivation appeared in 41 of the 84 occupations analysed, making it the most widespread human capability identified in the research.

Roles relying heavily on trust, empathy and personal interaction carried significantly lower automation risk than routine administrative positions.

Other highly ranked skills included crisis de-escalation and conflict resolution, emergency and business continuity leadership, public speaking and executive presentation, safety compliance and code interpretation, risk assessment and on-site safety judgement, and stakeholder and community engagement.

The research used O*NET occupational data to map individual skills against occupations where they appear most strongly.

Each skill was then scored based on the average automation risk of its associated roles, alongside how broadly the skill appeared across multiple professions.

A healthcare workforce analyst at Click Finder said: “The skills that protect healthcare jobs from automation are not the ones you might expect.

“Complex diagnosis ranks highly, but it is not the top skill. Crisis intervention is.”

They added: “That means a paramedic making split-second decisions on a roadside is safer from automation than a physician diagnosing a rare disease from an office.

“The reason is not about intelligence. It is about environment. The emergency scene is chaotic, unpredictable and full of incomplete information.

“AI can handle controlled environments much sooner than it can handle chaos.”
