UK backs stronger female representation in STEM at Malaysia forum
Held on 30th March 2026, the “Leading the Future: Women and Girls in Science Forum” brought together around 110 participants, including government officials.
The British High Commission Kuala Lumpur hosted a forum aimed at promoting women’s participation and leadership in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as part of ongoing efforts to support a more inclusive global innovation ecosystem.
Held on 30th March 2026, the “Leading the Future: Women and Girls in Science Forum” brought together around 110 participants, including government officials, academics, researchers, educators and science entrepreneurs.
The event focused on celebrating women scientists while addressing the structural barriers that continue to limit progression into senior STEM roles.
Opening the event, Ajay Sharma reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to inclusivity in STEM: “We are committed to ensuring inclusivity and strong women’s representation across all engagements and projects, thereby supporting a more inclusive and geographically diverse STEM ecosystem in Malaysia, one that values women’s leadership, lived experiences, and contributions across regions and career stages.”
The forum also featured contributions from Malaysian science leaders, including Nagulendran Kangayatkaras and keynote speaker Ravigadevi Sambanthamurthi.
Through panel discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions, the event explored ways to strengthen pathways for women and girls in STEM, with a particular focus on leadership, representation and long-term career development.
The forum forms part of wider UK engagement in supporting diversity and inclusion across international science and innovation partnerships.
