Research by Haypp found that one in three millennials turn to coffee or energy drinks to stay focused at work.

21% of people in the UK said they drink coffee or energy drinks to boost productivity.

This rose to 33% among 25 to 34 year olds, showing that many young professionals relied on caffeine to get through the day.

83% of millennials said they drink energy drinks, and 44% of people over 65 also consumed them.

One in 10 millennials said they ‘need’ energy drinks to get through their workday, while 35% drank at least one energy drink a day.

13% of all respondents drank multiple energy drinks daily, with women three times more likely than men to do so.

Markus Lindblad, head of legal and external affairs at Haypp, said caffeine blocks the body’s fatigue signals, increases dopamine, sharpens focus and helps compensate for poor sleep.

Lindblad said: “Caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain. Adenosine is a chemical that builds up during the day and makes you feel tired.

“When that signal is muted, you can feel more alert even though your body is tired.

“Caffeine slightly boosts dopamine levels, the same system involved in our motivation and reward systems.”

Lindblad added: “For someone feeling burnt out, that can temporarily improve mood, make tasks feel more doable, and reduce that ‘what’s the point?’ feeling.

“Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, which can improve attention span, speed up reaction time, and help stay focused during repetitive tasks.

“That’s why it’s especially appealing when you’re feeling mentally drained but still need to perform.”

He said: “Caffeine can enhance cognition — especially alertness, attention, reaction time, and (in certain cases) memory.

“Burnout often comes with poor sleep habits. Caffeine helps mask sleep deprivation, letting people push through the day.

“Studies show caffeine actually improves alertness, reaction time, and vigilance, especially in sleep-deprived individuals.”
