East Ayrshire Council launches vocation training programme to upskill residents

East Ayrshire Council launched a new vocational training programme aimed at upskilling residents in Cumnock and Doon Valley. 

The programme is part of the Ayrshire Growth Deal and supports employment in the electric vehicle and hydrogen automotive sector.

The pilot project is linked to the community renewable energy project, which focuses on creating a pipeline of skilled individuals for local employers. 

Nine mechanics from local garages attended the first training session at Emergency One in Cumnock, working with staff to gain accredited electric vehicle qualifications. 

Further sessions are planned for March, with up to 30 local mechanics expected to gain skills and qualifications in the sustainable transport sector.

Pupils from Robert Burns and Doon Academy will also take part, as Ayrshire College will deliver a schools component to introduce skills in hydrogen and electric vehicle engineering.

Councillor Iain Linton, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Resources and Economy at East Ayrshire Council, said: “East Ayrshire Council has a sound partnership with Emergency One, a hugely successful local company which has already launched the careers of many local apprentices, and we are delighted that they are on board with this Community Renewable Energy project.

“One of the main aims of Ayrshire Growth Deal is to boost employment prospects for local people and this CoRE project does just that.
