Associated British Ports (ABP) has launched a new virtual work experience programme aimed at helping young people learn about careers in the UK ports sector.
The initiative, launched during National Careers Week, provides students with an online introduction to how Britain’s ports operate and the role they play in trade and the energy transition.
Developed in partnership with Talent XP, the programme uses interactive modules and can be completed on a computer, tablet or mobile device.
ABP said the virtual format is designed to widen access for students who may not have the opportunity to visit ports in person, removing geographic and logistical barriers to learning about the industry.
The programme includes four modules covering different aspects of port operations and careers. “Keeping Britain Trading” explains how goods move through ports and the scale of ABP’s operations across the UK, while “Enabling the Energy Transition” explores how ports support renewable energy projects such as offshore wind.
A further module, “Home Safe Every Day”, focuses on the company’s approach to safety and wellbeing, and “Careers at ABP” introduces the range of pathways available, including apprenticeships, graduate roles and entry-level opportunities.
Students who complete the programme receive a certificate and can remain connected with ABP to explore future opportunities.
Rachael Parr, group HR director at ABP, said: “Our goal is to open the world of ports to a much wider group of young people. Many students have never seen a port or understood the careers linked to maritime logistics. This programme gives them a simple and engaging way to learn, wherever they live.
“ABP offers a range of early career opportunities across its ports, including apprenticeships, graduate roles and entry pathways into engineering, marine operations, commercial, and safety. The virtual programme gives students a starting point to learn about these routes and understand where their interests fit within the industry.”
