London and Scotland record lowest annual working hours in UK, study finds

London and Scotland have the lowest average annual working hours in the UK, according to analysis of official labour data examining regional work patterns and earnings.

The study by online gaming platform Heart Bingo analysed 2025 Office for National Statistics data covering more than 20 million full-time jobs across the UK.

It found workers in both London and Scotland average 1,976 hours per year – around 26 hours fewer than the UK average of 2,002 hours.

Despite identical working hours, earnings differ significantly.

London workers earn an average annual salary of £59,160, compared with £43,665 in Scotland.

The North West of England and Wales ranked jointly second, with employees working an average of 1,996 hours and 48 minutes annually.

Average pay was £41,419 in the North West and £38,543 in Wales.

A three-way tie for third place included the South West, Yorkshire and the Humber, and the North East, where employees work around 2,012 hours annually, slightly above the UK average.

Among these regions, the South West recorded the highest average salary at £40,696, while the North East reported the lowest at £37,634.

The East of England and West Midlands ranked jointly fourth, with workers averaging 2,028 hours annually.

The East Midlands recorded the highest working hours overall, at approximately 2,033 hours per year.
