easyJet opens applications for 2026 Engineering Apprenticeship Programme

easyJet has opened applications for its 2026 Engineering Apprenticeship Programme, calling on young people to help shape the future of aviation as the industry faces a skills gap. 

The UK Civil Aviation Authority estimates that 27% of the aircraft engineering workforce is set to retire in the next decade.

Research commissioned by easyJet found 65% of 2,000 Brits aged 16-24 had never considered a career in engineering. 

Over half (59%) believed they didn’t have the right qualifications, 34% said engineering was never put forward as an option at school, and 21% thought it was too costly. 

There was also a continued gender gap, with only 36% of young females saying they’d considered engineering, compared to 52% of males.

Additionally, research found more young people want jobs with purpose. 

Over half (52%) said they wanted a role that benefits society. 

44% wanted a career that would help solve climate change, with 43% saying engineering could help achieve these aims.
