More than 20 staff members from across British Steel have completed the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention training.

The training was delivered with North Lincolnshire Public Health and Baton of Hope as part of the Baton of Hope tour, which will start at British Steel’s Scunthorpe headquarters on 15th September.

The tour will visit 20 locations across the UK to raise awareness of suicide prevention.

All participants said the 2-day course was beneficial and that they felt better prepared to support people in crisis or struggling with suicidal thoughts.

British Steel has signed up to the gold level Workplace Pledge to show commitment to mental health and suicide awareness.

The pledge includes a promise to remove stigma around mental health in the workplace, raise awareness of suicide and mental health, improve support, and make suicide prevention a priority.

A team of hope ambassadors will be trained to provide support to colleagues, building on existing mental health services.

Martin Welch, occupational health manager at British Steel, said: “It was really positive to see so many colleagues from across all areas of the business taking part in this training.

“Through training sessions like this and through our commitment to the gold level workplace pledge we hope to support each other to increase suicide awareness, support and prevention.”
